Very few artists can say they were bitten by the music bug after visiting the home of country music legend Randy Travis…but that is exactly the manner in which Summer Franklin’s story has kicked off. The 16-year old country artist was born in Mineola, Texas, grew up near New Hampshire’s Lake Winnipesaukee, and currently lives in Celina, Texas where she is now pursuing a career in music.
Over the years, Summer has made several trips to Nashville. It was there that she recorded her upcoming EP at Beaird Music Group, considered by many to be one of the top recording studios in Music City! She loves telling fans the story about how she met members of the Oak Ridge Boys after one of their performances at the iconic Grand Ole’ Opry!
When Summer is not singing, writing new songs, or honing her guitar skills, she can be found taking part in several sports, including volleyball, basketball, and track. She has also volunteered for her church’s IServ program, which assigns members to help those in need with repairs to their homes and yard work. Summer also loves to travel, with past destinations including Florida, Maine, Cancun, and Dominican Republic.
Sometimes the journey from Point A to Point B is just as interesting as what awaits at your final destination. Such is the case when talking about Getting Ready To Fly, the debut EP from country music artist Summer Franklin. From being called onto the Grand Ole Opry stage by the legendary Oak Ridge Boys to being endorsed by multi-platinum singer Randy Travis, Summer has made a crash landing into the country music scene.
While Summer has always had an interest in music and singing, her story truly kicked into high gear during her first visit to Nashville. It was during that trip that Summer got her first taste of being in a recording studio when she visited Beaird Music Group and recorded a couple of demo tracks. Upon hearing those recordings, family friend Randy Travis suggested Summer consider pursuing singing on a professional level.
Summer’s first trip to Nashville also included a career-defining visit to the Grand Ole Opry. While visiting the legendary venue, Summer had the opportunity to meet the Oak Ridge Boys back stage prior to one of their performances. During the show, the Oak Ridge Boys called Summer up on stage.
“Joe Bonsall told the crowd that there was somebody very special in the crowd,” Summer remembers. “He called me out onto the stage in front of a packed house and everybody was cheering and clapping. The feeling I experienced at that point changed my life.”
Summer later returned to Nashville and the Beaird Music Group studio to begin laying down tracks for Getting Ready To Fly. The EP consists of six cover songs hand picked by Summer for their personal meaning, including The House That Built Me (Miranda Lambert), The Climb (Miley Cyrus), and American Honey (Lady Antebellum).
“The House That Built Me is important to me because I have very good memories of the house I grew up in and of my best friends who lived down the street,” Summer explains. “There were so many fun times we had on the porch, fond memories of birthday parties, and unwrapping gifts at Christmas. That’s what I want to remember for the rest of my life and most everyone relates to those feelings.”
She goes on to explain that she feels The Climb is relevant to her new career in music because there have been times where she has faced challenges and had to keep her head held high while pushing forward. American Honey resonates with Summer because she sees herself as a teenager growing up with a sweetness and innocence that is suggested by the song’s lyrics.
It didn’t take very long for the EP to gain traction on radio. Summer has not only received emails from several prominent disc jockeys asking for permission to play her music, but also widespread recognition thanks to two disc jockeys in particular: Bobby “The Iceman” Golombowski of Best Country Radio and Peter J of NZCMR. Both are syndicated on Internet radio and have audiences throughout the United States, United Kingdom, France, Australia, and many other countries. The exposure has helped Summer reach the #1 spot on the European and International Independent Country Music Artists’ Chart.
With the EP already receiving endorsements from the Oak Ridge Boys and Randy Travis, Summer is now hoping fans will find something in the music to which they can find an emotional bond.
In the Dec.2015/Jan.2016 issue of Conversations Magazine, Cyrus Webb, has Summer Franklin Among The Top 25 New Recording Artists You Should Know for 2016.
It appears safe to say that Summer’s journey is just beginning.
